San Jacinto College (SJC) Eye Care Technology department students rocked the Kids Vision for Life See to Succeed's first mission October 24 through 28, 2016 at the Good Neighbor Clinic, in The Houston Heights. The event saw 2,017 students first through twelfth from the Houston, Lamar and Galena Park Independent School Districts, out of which 1,932 received free eyeglasses. Those 1,932 students were able to pick eyewear from a large selection of designer frames in multiple colors. The mission also identified 85 children who needed and received a referral for medical eye conditions and /or diseases. Forty-six members of the SJC Eye Care program performed pre-screening test as well as assisted the optometrist writing the prescription for glasses and the opticians fitting the eyewear. The glasses will be delivered to the children at their respective schools next week.
This mission is a two fold activity, service to our communities and learning opportunities for our eye care students. Students are able to develop and master their skills in visual assessments, while assisting chair-side with a doctor and helping patients in choosing correct eyewear for their face shape and visual correction. It gives the eye care student real time clinical learning experience, while again dealing with a range of patient personalities and their health care needs. Not to mention working along side different personalities, needs of the doctors, volunteers and peers as a team to make each mission successful.
Out next event will be at San Jacinto College, on November 28 through December 2. Pasadena Independent School District, first through twelfth graders, vision needs will be ascertained, cared for and met.
